I approached Joe with the idea of just the two of us going away instead of a family summer vacation. First, he told me no. He said there was no way he could go to Disneyland without the girls! I told him they'd get over it and not even care as long as we brought them home a surprise. He asked them, and I was right! They could care less! So, we started making plans. This would be our first time away since our honeymoon. We had gone away for a night before here and there, but never a whole week! I was so excited, but also nervous to leave the girls for that long. I'm a little attached. Luckily Joe's mom was willing to take them and it just turned out that she would be going to Joe's sister Cheryl's house in SLC for the week to watch her kids too. The girls were so excited to go and see their cousins, that they didn't even care about us going away.
We were originally going to leave early Monday morning, but Carol was leaving Sunday afternoon with the girls, so we decided to book a room in Vegas for the night and make our drive a little shorter Monday. We rented the cutest little car and sent the van with Carol and all of the kiddos. We dropped them off around 1:30 and headed down. I was sad but excited at the same time.
We made it to Vegas and ended up staying at Sam's Town. Joe was so paranoid that it was going to be all ghetto, but it ended up being really nice. We were both laughing because we pulled up and didn't know what to do with the valet. Can you say sheltered?
We got checked in and rested for a bit then got ready for dinner and a night out. We went to a cute little Mexican place in the hotel. It was so yummy and we got to sit out on the patio that overlooks the light/water show that they do. It was honestly our funnest night of our trip!
The next morning we got up and headed down to breakfast. As we were ordering Joe got a call but ignored it. We went out to eat and he listened to his voice mail. Let's just say, he really should have answered it. It ended up being our bank saying that they were freezing our cards because of a suspicious purchase made in Las Vegas. Holy crap! I didn't think us going two hours away would put up any red flags. After about 25 minutes on the phone Joe was able to get it sorted out..luckily. That would not have been fun! After that excitement we started our lovely not so fun trip to California. I am not a pleasant traveler. I have always gotten car sick, so half of our family vacations as a child I was drugged up the majority of the time. Joe always says I'm worse than the kids. lol. "Are we there yet?"
We both decided that to make it easier on us both, that we wouldn't try rushing to get there. So we stopped and shopped at a few places on the way. In a way it was good, and then in another not so much. It made the drive seem like forever!
This was our view as we first got into the gorge. Not Good! It was slow, bumper to bumper the entire way. Even clear past Bunkerville.
Joe has the duck face mastered!
The next few days were spent at Disneyland, where I got the royal crap scared out of me a few times but loved every minute of it! It was so much fun just the two of us. We got to go on the "big people" rides as much as we wanted! I had two requests. Try the Pineapple Dole Whip, and ride Indiana Jones as many times as we could. We also tried the famous corn dogs and split some treats at the chocolate shop. They didn't disappoint. They were all delicious!
We had so much fun together. I definitely want to do it more often. It was so nice to have him all to myself. We got to be as lazy as we wanted and eat a lot of delicious food. I introduced Joe to The Cheesecake Factory. Yum! I'm still craving it. I had my hard moments of missing the girls and I'm sure Carol loved our million phone calls. What surprised me the most was how hard of a time Joe was having! He missed those two crazy girls so much that as soon as he heard they were heading home a day early, he was outta there!
I think we were all ready to be reunited and I'm sure Carol was ready for a kid free week. Really, we can't thank you enough Carol. Thanks again for helping us out and for making memories with the girls. We all had so much fun!
